"It was a strange sound, raw and wild and hoary, yet at the same time, familiar somehow -- a great, aching lamentation
that stopped people walking by in the hallway outside cold." ~ Inara Verzemnieks, The Oregonian, October 2004
NEWSFLASH!
Watch the piece on Portland Sacred Harp
that was shown on Oregon Art Beat!

Very special thanks go to our friends Richard Wilhelm & Sue Arbuthnot

Sacred Harp shapenote singing is a community musical and social activity, emphasizing participation, not performance.

We sing in four-part, unaccompanied harmony from an early American songbook called The Sacred Harp, which has been continuously in print and in use since 1844. It is the backbone of one of this country’s oldest, most vital and soul-stirring musical traditions.

Everyone is invited to come and sing or just listen. No experience is necessary ... really!
Our events have no membership requirement and no affiliation: religious, political or otherwise.
